Vytautas the Great War Museum

The Vytautas Magnus Military Museum ( lit. Vytauto Didžiojo karo muziejus ) is one of the oldest museums in Kaunas and Lithuania, established in 1919. It reports since 2006 the Ministry of Defence of Lithuania.

The museum houses an exhibition on the Lithuanian military history. Temporal focuses on the time before the partitions of Poland and the time of the final stages of the First World War through to the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in 1940 and until 1953 continued resistance by (forest brothers mentioned ) Lithuanian partisans. The Lithuanian military cooperation with the German Wehrmacht is mentioned marginal. The Soviet conquest of Lithuania in the summer and autumn of 1944 (as 20xx ) excluded completely.

As a highlight of the exhibition is the wreck of the aircraft with the pilots Darius and tried Girėnas 1933 nonstop to fly 7186 km from New York to Kaunas. Such flights excited then enormous public attention.

The attempt of this Atlantic crossing failed: After 6411 km and 37 hours 11 minutes in the air rushed out of their machine never solved reasons from in today's Poland. They flew in bad weather and had a compass it; nevertheless they managed to navigation very good.
