Vytegra

Vytegra (Russian Вытегра ) is a city in North-West Russia. It is located in the Vologda Oblast and has 10,488 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 280 km north-west of the river Vytegra Oblasthauptstadt Vologda, about 15 km from its mouth in Lake Onega. The Vytegra here is part of the Volga-Baltic Waterway, as well as her in 1810 went into operation predecessor, the Marien -channel system.

Vytegra is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The place is since 1710 under the name Wjangi (Russian Вянги, after this opening into the Vytegra tributary) known and received in 1773 under the present name of a town.
