Although some teams were better amateur teams in the early years, the league for national and international players brought a professional basis. Among the best known European players who have played in the W-League include Laura Österberg Kalmari from Finland and Kelly Smith of England.

Between 1995 and 1997, the participating teams were divided into regional groups. In 1998, the league was after sports terms divided into a W -1 and W-2 Division. After the debut season of the WUSA in 2001 this was reversed.

Record champion of the League and the reigning champion, the Pali Blues in Los Angeles with three championships.

Many franchises of the W-League teams are named after men. Examples include the Atlanta Silverbacks Women or the Seattle Sounders Women, whose husbands play teams in the professional leagues in the country.
