W. A. H. Rushton

William Albert Hugh Rushton (* December 8, 1901, † 21 June 1980) was Professor of Physiology at Trinity College ( Cambridge ). His main interest was the perception of color; his principle of Univariate has significance in the physiology of the senses.

In 1970 he was president of the Society for Psychical Research. In the same year he was the Royal Medal of the Royal Society was awarded.

Principle of Univariate

The excitation of a photoreceptor depends only on whether it has captured a photon or not. This can be done in different combinations of wavelength and intensity (see absorption spectrum). The brain therefore does not know what color the corresponding point of the retinal image has. ( that is, a photon is absorbed by a photoreceptor (rods ), then the information will be lost on its wavelength. )
