Wabasha is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota on the upper Mississippi. It is the administrative seat of the eponymous county. The city lies near the mouth of the Chippewa River, which empties into the Mississippi River on the opposite bank in the state of Wisconsin.

Geography

Wabasha is below the Lake Pepin, a natural reservoir of the Mississippi, which lies on the border between the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota.

History

Wabasha is one of the oldest cities on the upper Mississippi. The first permanent settlement was in 1826, when Augustin Rocque, the son of a Frenchman and the daughter of the Sioux chief Wapashaw, settled there. The second Treaty of Prairie du Chien was in 1830 a recognized village. In 1843 the town was named Wabashaw, in tribute to the chief.
