Wabaunsee County, Kansas

Wabaunsee County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Alma.

Geography

The County is located in the central north east of Kansas and has an area of 2071 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Pottawatomie County, Shawnee County, Osage County, Lyon County, Morris County, Geary County and Riley County.

History

Wabaunsee County was formed in 1855 as Richardson County and one of the first 33 counties that were formed by the first territorial administration. In February 1859 it was renamed in Wabaunsee County, named after a chief of the Pottawatomie Indians.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Wabaunsee County 6885 people in 2633 households and 1958 families in Wabaunsee County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.24 percent White, 0.46 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.60 percent from other races groups; 1.00 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.86 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2633 households out of which 33.5 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 64.3 percent were married couples living together, 6.3 percent were single mothers and 25.6 percent were non-families. 23.0 percent of all households were single-person households and 10.8 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.01.

26.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.2 percent 18 to 24 years 26.7 percent between 25 and 44, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 102.5 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 years or 101.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 41,710, and the median income for a family was $ 47,500. Males had a median income of $ 31,629, women $ 23,148. The per capita income was $ 17,704. 5.8 percent of families and 7.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
