Waco CRG

The Waco CRG is a double-decker racing aircraft of the U.S. manufacturer Waco Aircraft Company.

History

The Waco CRG has been developed specifically for use as a racing aircraft. The two have been build with the approvals NC600Y ( Werknr. 3349 ) and NC660Y ( Werknr. 3350 ) were the day before the start of the " Ford Reliability Tour" finished in 1930 (also known as " 6th Annual National Air Tour " hereinafter). The two CRG finished the 1600 mile race with an average speed of 237 km / h on the second and third places.

Construction

The hull of the CRG 's just like the tail surfaces of welded tubular steel construction with wooden moldings. The built in timber wing had an M-18 profile and original metal ailerons, but they were replaced by wooden ones at the restored machine. The paneled solid chassis has a track width of 2.14 m and is equipped with oil - spring legs. The machine has indeed three seats, the front seat, however, is permanently covered.

The original Wright J6 -7 engine with 240 hp was replaced during the restoration by a Continental R -760 -E2 with 235 hp. Interestingly, the machine achieves without the Townend ring normally installed at a higher 10 mph speed limit. The fuel capacity is 320 liters (80 U.S. gal. ) With a consumption of 49 l / h (13 U.S. gal / h).

Whereabouts

NC600Y was sold to the Skywriting Corporation of America and was for a time the colors of Coca -Cola. After a landing accident it was decommissioned in Long Iceland. In 1963 she was sold and flew again in 1975 after a 12 -year restoration.
