Waggon Union

Waggon Union ( WU) was a Berlin -Wittenau and Netphen ( Siegen ) based manufacturer of rail vehicles and machines.

It was formed in 1971 by merger of the German company car and Machine Factory (DWM ) in Berlin, SEAG wagon Dreis -Tiefenbach and Rhine steel transport technology. It was bought in 1990 by ABB Henschel. ABB Henschel later passed into the ADtranz and went again later in the Canadian company Bombardier. In 1997, the new location in Berlin- Wilhelmsruh was built.

At the instigation of the Cartel factory parts had to be removed. Thus, the Berlin- Wilhelmsruh was sold to the company Stadler Rail. The plant in Netphen near Siegen remains one of Bombardier and manufactures bogies. Previously there complete freight cars were manufactured, for example, bulk wagons, tank wagons and carriages sliding door.

Products

The Waggon Union has developed and manufactured, including the cars of the TUI Holiday Express numerous types of passenger coaches and freight wagons. A well-known railcar is developed by O & K and built by Waggon Union for several German private railway NE 81st In addition, the Union wagon was involved in the construction of heavy small car Klv 53 and 96 Klv and the development of Klv 54. Among the research projects included the construction of passenger cabins for the Berlin maglev.

However, the largest client was the State of Berlin. At the Berlin location in the Miraustraße among other subway cars and structures of the double-decker buses for the BVG (Type MAN SD 200) built and main studies on S-Bahn railcar were performed. Furthermore, the WU supplied tramcars for transport companies Karlsruhe, Darmstadt transport company HEAG and the four railcars 22 to 25 of Albtal Traffic society.

The location Netphen was responsible for the production of freight cars of all types, including tankers and bulk freight wagons. In addition, there bogies for wagons, cars and trams are produced (now Bombardier ) today. Among other things, there also the bogies have been developed for the ICE 1.

Around 1990, the Union wagon was also involved in the production of the first light rail vehicles with low-floor technology, the VÖV low-floor prototype. However, this never came in the line operation. The last rail car of this type is in the possession of the Rhine Bahn AG.
