The Waianiwaniwa River is a river in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand.

Its source is located in the foothills of the Southern Alps. It flows in the Selwyn River, this in the Lake Ellesmere. The Central Plains Water Trust wants to damming the river for an irrigation project, the plan is rejected by environmental groups and the local Malvern Hills Protection Society.

In the upper reaches of the river live stocks of rare, counting the galaxies Canterbury Mudfish ( Neochanna burrowsius )
