The Waiau River in Southland on the South Island of New Zealand is the largest of three rivers of the same name in New Zealand. He is the outflow of Lake Te Anau, from which it flows 10 km to the south into Lake Manapouri, then 70 km to the south, before it flows 8 km south of Tuatapere in the Foveaux Strait. It also absorbs water of Lake Monowai.

The river served as the backdrop for the River Anduin at the end of the film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship at the scenes in which the Uruk- hai, the companions chase along a riverbank.
