Waiheke Island

Waiheke is an island in New Zealand, located about 18 km from Auckland. It is named after the Great Barrier Iceland, the second largest island in the Hauraki Gulf. The heavily indented island is 92 square kilometers in size, its east-west extent is 19.25 kilometers, the north - south length 9.65 km. There are 19 bays, mostly with fine sandy beaches. Mainly in the western part of the island live permanently about 8000 inhabitants. In the high season there can be as many as twice the users of vacation rentals more. There are several wineries on the island.

Infrastructure

The crossing by ferry takes about 35 minutes. At the ferry terminal in Waiheke cars and bicycles can be rented. There is a regular bus service. Streets, there are almost only in not western part of the island. Hiking trails are well signposted.
