Waikanae

Waikanae is a small town on New Zealand's Kapiti Coast. The name means in the language of Māori " The waters of the yellow-eyed mullet ". Administratively, the city is part of the Kapiti Coast District of the Wellington region.

The city is located 60 km north of Wellington, 8 km north-east of Paraparaumu and southwest of Otaki. North of Waikanae is the small settlement of Peka Peka.

Waikanae Waikanae Beach and the neighboring settlement serve as a quiet residential area for families and the elderly. For residents and visitors to the Kapiti Coast there are numerous cafes in both places.

Four miles from Waikanae Beach is the island of Kapiti Iceland in the Tasman Sea. The waters between the island and mainland are a Marine Protected Area. Sometimes also durchwandernde whales can be observed. The black sand beach is popular for water sports and hiking.

Domestically, behind Waikanae is the mountain range of the Tararua Ranges and the Akatarawa Valley, where the wildlife sanctuary Staglands Wildlife Reserve is located. A road through the valley connects the town on Reikorangi and Cloustonville with the Hutt Valley.

The Waikanae River flows south of Waikanae into the sea.

Transport

The city is located on State Highway 1 and the North Iceland Main Trunk Railway. The only direct train to Wellington until 2011, the Capital Connection. This train is leaving Palmerston North to Wellington in the morning and returns in the evening. However, there was a regular bus service to Paraparaumu, runs from which the Tranz Metro Line Paraparaumu to Wellington. On 8 May 2007, the Regional Council of Wellington decided to extend the electrified transport system as far as Waikanae. The expansion should be completed in 2010. Since February 20, 2011 railcar of the Kapiti Line operate partly in half-hour intervals between Wellington and Waikanae (journey time: 60 minutes).
