Waikiki

Waikiki ( Hawaiian Waikīkī ) is a neighborhood of Honolulu, in the south of Oahu, one of the Hawaiian islands and has the same name as Waikiki beach one of the most famous beaches in the world. Waikiki stretches along the coast in the southeast of Honolulu to Diamond Head. The northern border is the Ala Wai Canal.

Originally Waikiki was a retreat for the Royal family in Hawaii in the 19th century, learned that surfing there. The first small hotels were built around 1880. Waikiki has partnered with several prestigious hotels ( inter alia, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel ) has developed into a tourist stronghold of Hawaii. Famous is the stretch of beach Waikīkī Beach, on which there is also a statue of Duke Kahanamoku Hawaiian sports stars.

In Kahala, east of Waikiki, is the former home of Doris Duke. The Shangri La called property houses a rich collection of Islamic art.
