Waioeka River

Geography

The river rises in the Huiarau Ranges, flows from there to the north, the city Opotiki wanders west to join with the inflow of Otara Rivers then almost two kilometers later in the Pacific Ocean. The Waioeka River drains an area of 825 km ².

Use

In the alluvium of the river, the Opotiki Flats, the river water for irrigation is used. In the upper course of the river, the river is used for kayaking and fishing for brown trout and rainbow trout. In the lower course of the river, the biological water quality of the river is in contrast to its neighboring river, the Otara River, a little muddy, but not bad.

Nature

To the west of the estuary is a sanctuary in which Australian Bittern, Baillon's Crake, banded Rail, stilt walkers, Farnsteiger and Maori Plover occur.
