Waitaki District

The Waitaki District is located on the South Island of New Zealand. It extends over part of the Otago region and a part of the Canterbury region.

Geography

The Waitaki district extends from the Pacific Ocean in the east to deep into the Mackenzie Basin in the west. The most important geographic feature of the district is the same river that flows through the entire area. Therefore, the district is so protracted. To the east of the district is the large alluvial fan of the river.

Economy

The largest economic sector is agriculture, especially in the east of the district.

Population

Capital and largest city of the territory is Oamaru, in over half of the population Waitakis. Other towns in the Waitaki District include Palmerston (not to be confused with Palmerston North in the North Island ), Kurow, Omarama, Moeraki, Shag Point and Ohau Village.
