Wake-on-ring

Wake On Modem ( WOM, even WOR / Wake-on- Ring ) is a standard to start a computer by calling a connected modem from the " Soft-Off " state.

To use WOM, modem, motherboard, PC power supply and BIOS must support this. The general requirement is that the computer modem is connected and that motherboard and modem are powered by standby power. Detects the modem, the ring signal on the analog phone line, there is this further processed on the pin 9 ( = Ring Indicator ) of the 9- pin serial port. The PC monitors, unless required to configure this port and starts the PC to FAX receiving or answering machine software. On some motherboards, an additional two -wire cable to the modem must be connected as long as the ring -detect signal is not via the serial interface connected and all configurable.
