Walasse Ting

Walasse Ting ( born October 13, 1929 in Shanghai, † 17 May 2010) was a Chinese- American artist and poet. Sometimes one uses his Chinese name "丁雄泉" or one of his translations: Ding Xiongquan or Ting Hsiung- ch'uan.

Life

Ting was born in 1929 in Shanghai. In 1946 he moved to Hong Kong and lived there several years. In 1952 he moved to Paris and met artists know how Karel Appel, Asger Jorn and Pierre Alechinsky, who were all members of the CoBrA group. Later he moved to New York, USA, where he found inspiration for his painting in the pop art and abstract expressionism. He began as an abstract artist, but most of his works since the mid- Seventies are popular figural. There are often large-scale works with large areas of color. Ting has painted with acrylics. Ting lived alternately in Amsterdam and New York.

Work

With his colorful paintings he has reached a wide audience. Naked women, cats, birds and other animals are typical themes in his works. Ting has written 13 books, including " One Cent Life " (EW Kornfeld, 1964), a portfolio of 62 lithographs by 28 artists, among them Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann, James Rosenquist, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, Kiki Kogelnik, Joan Mitchell and Sam Francis.

Works by Ting can be seen in many collections, including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; Tate Modern, London; Centre Pompidou, París and in the Hong Kong Museum of Art

Awards

In 1970 he won the Guggenheim Fellowship Award for Drawing.
