The name is Walchsee in documents from the 14th and 15th centuries ( Walgsee, Walichsee ) frequently, but erroneously synonymous with Waldsee found or derived from vallis ( Talsee ). But walchsee was a " vicus Romanicus " (Romans settlement ), the Alpine regions in yet by the Romans and their descendants (old German Wallen, Walchen called ) were inhabited. The first mention of Walchsee contains a document of Pope Eugene III. from the year 1151, with which ( in Rosenheim) held the possessions of the monastery Rott and thereby also the places wax Pure, Durholz and Walshe were called.

In 1749 was on the Mount of Olives, built at the current Sedlmayr villa, a school and at the same time a hermit dwelling in which the pious hermit sided school service. The rock behind the Sedlmayr Chapel still show the cave -like depression in the Hermitage (imitation of a hermitage, grotto ) existed. 1853 Old Hermitage was abandoned.

When speaking of Arms, it points to the magnificent landmark of the whole area, Lake Walch, which was also the name of the community.

Walchsee has been spared from the large and incisive world-historical events. The Romans were limited to the major road through the Inn Valley. Except by occasional fires remained the area still to before the Second World War, an unspoiled idyll. Through tourism, road construction and the initiative of its inhabitants, the town became a prolific and highly visited vacation home.

Sage from Lake Walch

Many, many years ago there was the site of the present Walch lake a large forest. It was a special forest with many valuable animals and rare plants. At the opposite edges of the forest there lived two peasants. Every farmer claimed the woods as his possession. First they discussed later screamed and cursed at her side. The children were forbidden to speak to each other much to play for. Then they spoke not a word to each other, if one looked at the other in the village, he went to the other side of the road. The dispute became worse and worse. One day, the two farmers met in "their " forest. They immediately began to argue. Then there was a long fight and no one wanted to give up. Suddenly the sky was dark. There was thunder and lightning. Then the families of peasants only heard a loud bang. Then there was silence. Where the two farmers had fought with each other, was now a source. Soon the whole forest was gone and there was only one large lake. The two farmers one has never seen.

Culture and sights

The site has largely changed with the advent of tourism. The original village streets with large central hall houses today is characterized by numerous, often oversized hotel construction. Only a few older buildings have been preserved, including the inn Schopferwirt ( Walchseerhof ) at the village square 2 It has, as well as the house No. 74 ( Paxerhof ) in Durchholzen, probably created by Josef Adam Mölk frescoes, which may have originated around 1765.

The Parish Church of St John the Baptist dates back in its present form probably by 1626. His time was the Gothic building renovated and expanded. A Baroque style, which also had a vaulting of the previously flat-roofed nave result, was conducted from 1702 to 1704 by a native of Kufstein city architect Martin Bock. There is a hall church with a polygonal choir, which is preceded by a tower with spire in the West. In the tower hall is a throated pointed portal. The current neo-Romanesque altar was created in 1855.

Environment

Located on a peninsula on the western shore of the lake remained until today a small raised bog complex obtained which was in places abgetorft. Added to moor grass ( Molinia caerulea) and grass bulrush ( Trichophorum cespitosum ). In the Torfstichen and parts which have remained intact, numerous rare plant species were able to maintain. This includes, or included by Smettan 1989:

North West of the center is by far the largest and still undisturbed peat bog in northern Tyrol spreads, the alluvial. It was created by the silting of the post-glacial glacier lake and forms a transitional bog. This is especially known for its diverse flora and fauna.
