Waldemar Malak

Waldemar Malak ( born July 17, 1970 in Gdansk, † 13 November 1992 Wejherowo ) was a Polish weightlifter.

Sporting career

Malak first international appearance, at the age of 19 years, the Junior World Championships in 1990 in Sarajevo, where he at first heavy weight up to 100 kg with a body weight of 94.25 kg 362.5 kg ( 170.0 / 192.5 kg ) could realize in a duel, and thus won silver. The European Championship 1991 in Władysławowo presented his first competition in the senior dar. Here he joined in the middle to heavyweight to 90 kg, but was able to bring a valid attempt in pushing after 160.0 kg in the snatch and thus remained unplaced.

In his only World Cup in 1991 in Donaueschingen Malak moved back into the class up to 100 kg and finished with 377.5 kg ( 172.5 / 205.0 kg ) in fourth place. The winner Igor Sadykov scored 415.0 kg. At the European Championship in the same year in Szekszárd to Malak ( 182.5 / 212.5 kg ) increased to 395.0 kg in single combat, and thus won the Vice European Championship behind Tymur Tajmasow with 415.0 kg and above Andor Szanyi, of 392.5 kg lifted.

With a capacity of European Malak had chances of a podium finish at the Olympic Games in 1992. These he could realize with 400.0 kg ( 185.0 / 215.0 kg ), he won the bronze medal behind Viktor Tregubow with 410.0 kg and Tajmasow with 402.5 kg.

Only a few months after the Olympics came Waldemar Malak on 13 November 1992 at the age of 22 years in a traffic accident. In his honor every year, the Waldemar Malak Memorial Tournament held in Gdansk.
