Waldems is a town in the Rheingau -Taunus-Kreis in Hesse, Germany. Seat of administration is the district of Esch.

Geography

Geographical Location

Waldems lies in the Taunus mountains in a wooded area at the northwestern foot of the Feldberg massif in 250 to 629.3 meters. Thus, the municipality has the highest elevation in the Rheingau -Taunus -Kreis, nameless located 1km east of the hamlet Wüstems.

Neighboring communities

Waldems is the easternmost community in the Rheingau -Taunus -Kreis, bordered to the north east on the community Weilrod, in the east on the community Schmitten, in the southeast on the community Glassworks ( all three in the Hoch-Taunus Kreis ) in the south and west by the town of Idstein (Rheingau -Taunus -Kreis), and in the northwest of the town of Bad Camberg ( Limburg- Weilburg ).

The municipality comprises the six districts Bermbach, Esch ( council offices ), Niederems ( with Reinborn ), Reichenbach, Steinfischbach and Wüstems.

History

Although traces of settlement far back go the current locations well back on deforestation in the Frankish period.

As the first part of the places Bermbach was mentioned in 772 as " Barenbach " in a document of the Lorsch codex. For many centuries this land border, the limit was nearby and later came here the spheres of influence of Electoral Mainz, Hesse and Nassau each other. From 1276 to 1570 the village is linked to the family of the Lords of Bermbach. Later Bermbach is mentioned in connection with the persecution of witches and the legendary Schinderhannes (1801 ).

The district Ash goes back to a settlement dating from the 6th century AD. Mentioned in documents is the place " Eschze " in the interest of the register Archive deacon to Dietkoirchen. Esch lies at the crossroads of ancient trade routes Frankfurt- Limburg- Cologne and the road between the Rhine and the Wetterau and therefore had always been a high volume of traffic.

The genesis of Niederems can be traced back to 1274. Due to hunger, disease and war, the population was always very low. In particular, the Thirty Years War reduced the number of households considerably.

Traces the colonization of Reichenbach can be traced back to pre-Christian times. Noteworthy are the hills grave pot of gold and the Ring Wall " castle ". 1428 the place is mentioned as " Richi Bach" in the annals of Nassau- Idstein. In 1772 a fire destroyed the old town center, but was then rebuilt quickly. From 1604 to 1968 there was a school in Reichenbach.

Near the hamlet Steinfischbach can be found in the form of the barrows skull and gold boiler evidence of early settlement. Written mention of the village is the first time in 1156 under the name " Vispach " in a document of the Archbishop Arnold of Mainz. Nearby were mined for iron ore and operated a quarry for millstones, road gravel, paving and boundary stones.

Wüstems was mentioned as " Wosten Emsse " in 1435 in a recording by Cuno Reifenberg. The first syllable of the place name is probably derived from Wüst waste places and points to an abandoned settlement facility or agricultural areas. The river name is derived from the Old High German Ems " Ohm". Both parts of the name suggest a more than 2000 -year-long settlement period. This is also indicated the Celtic hillfort at the nearby Taunus survey "castle" out.

In 1806 the municipality to the newly formed Duchy of Nassau and became Prussian with this 1866.

In the context of local government reform in Hesse joined on 1 August 1972, the formerly independent communities Bermbach and ash from the Lower Taunus district and Niederems, Reichenbach, Steinfischbach and Wüstems from the district Usingen to today's total community Waldems together.

The acting mayor since 2003 Werner Scherf (SPD ) was re-elected on December 14, 2008 in a runoff election with 52.6 % of votes. The turnout was 67.5 %.

Twinning

The community Waldems maintains partnership relations with

  • Saint -Bonnet -en- Champsaur in the Hautes -Alpes, France since 1982 and
  • Szikszó in Hungary since 1997.

Structures

Economy and infrastructure

Previously lived the inhabitants of the villages of the agriculture and forestry. In the second half of the 20th century Waldems has however become a residential community. Most employees earn their livelihood, supported by good transport links, in the Rhine- Main area.

In Waldems - Wüstems is the location of Ulisses Media & Game Distributions GmbH; a publishing house that sells, among other things, the pen -and- paper role-playing game Das Schwarze Auge (DSA).

Traffic

The community is well served by the eight kilometers distant point Idstein the Federal Highway 3 to the road network. In addition, the federal highways 8 and 275 run through the municipality and intersect in Esch.
