Waldweiler

Waldweiler is a municipality in the Trier -Saar castle in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality of Kell am See.

Geography

The place is situated on the Black Hochwald forest at the foot of Devil's head.

To Waldweiler includes the living spaces and home Bilstein Mühlscheid well as a few houses of the hamlet Niederkell which is otherwise within the boundaries of the municipality Mandern.

History

The history of life to the devil head goes back to the time of the Celts, who mined iron ore in the area. The first evidence of settlement of the present local situation of Waldweiler date from the Roman period, from the current seven Roman settlement sites were localized.

By the end of the 18th century the village belonged to the direct imperial rule shillings of the Trier cathedral chapter. In 1794, the left bank of the Rhine was occupied by French revolutionary troops. From 1798 to 1814 Waldweiler belonged to the Canton Hermes wedge in Saarland Department. Because of the Congress of Vienna (1815 ) agreements, the region came to the Kingdom of Prussia. The municipality was assigned to the mayor's Kell in 1816 established the district of Trier and was from 1822 until the end of World War II to the Rhine province. Since 1946 Waldweiler is part of Rhineland- Palatinate.

  • The Church of St. Willibrord was designed by architect Heinz Bienefeld built in the years 1969-1973 as a brick building on a polygonal floor plan. The Gothic choir of the original church was built in the new construction. The church was honored in 1977 with the award for exemplary building in Rhineland- Palatinate.
