Waleran III, Duke of Limburg

Walram IV of Limburg (* 1160, † 1226, buried in the Abbey Rolduc ) was Count of Luxembourg since 1214 and since 1221 Duke of Limburg and Margrave of Arlon and until 1221 Mr. of Monschau.

Life

He was the eldest son of Duke Henry III. of Limburg and Sophie von Saarbrücken ( daughter of Count Simon I of Saarbrücken).

Walram took with his father, Henry III. on the Third Crusade in part; they traveled independently of the main army of Emperor Barbarossa and joined in the Holy Land before the army of Richard the Lionheart on. 1196/97 he rebelled along with his father against the Emperor Henry VI. and participated in the Battle of Wassenberg in 1206. By his second marriage in 1214 to the Countess Ermesinde of Luxembourg (House of Namur) was Walram IV, Count of Luxembourg ( de jure uxoris ) and was thus involved in the inheritance disputes to Luxembourg and Namur. He also took part in 1214 on Welf side at the Battle of Bouvines. In the years 1217 and 1218 he participated in the Fifth Crusade and fought at the siege of Damietta. After the death of his father Henry III. in 1221 was Walram Duke of Limburg and Count of Arlon, at the same time he gave up his rule over Monschau to his eldest son, Henry.

Walram IV had at least four children from his first marriage to Gwendolyn of Monschau, were these:

  • Henry IV of Limburg ( † 1247 ) ∞ Irmgard of Berg
  • Walram II of Monschau († 1242 ) ∞ Elisabeth von Bar daughter of Count Theobald I of Bar and Countess Ermesinde II of Luxembourg

Walram IV had at least four children with Ermesinde II of Luxembourg, these were from his second marriage:

  • Catherine of Limburg (* 1215, † April 18, 1255 ), ∞ Duke Matthew II of Lorraine
  • Henry V of Luxembourg (c. 1216, † 1281 ) ∞ Margaret of Bar, daughter of Henry II of Bar
