Wales Island (Nunavut)

Wales Iceland ( Inuktitut: Shartoo; formerly Prince of Wales, Iceland ) is an uninhabited island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of the Canadian territory of Nunavut.

The island is 1.5 km off the coast of the Melville Peninsula in the south of the Gulf of Boothia in the Committee Bay.

The land area of ​​Wales Iceland is 1137 km ². Wales Iceland from north to south measures 63 km and 23 km in east-west direction. The highest elevation of the island reaches 165 m.

The island was named by the Scottish polar explorer John Rae as "Prince of Wales Iceland ". Later, the island name has been shortened and is now called just " Wales Iceland ".
