Walgett, New South Wales

Walgett is an Australian town, located in the state of New South Wales. The approximately 1,600 inhabitants city lies at the confluence of the two rivers Barwon River and Namoi River.

Founded in Walgett in March 1885. Once the settlement was the port for paddle steamer that went up the Murray -Darling river system. Similarly Walgett was a regional center for the cotton industry and a trading center for wheat. Today Walgett is the starting point for Opalschürfer.

In the 1980s Walgetts residents were not given the target of scorn and ridicule. The place was a running joke in the sitcom Hey Dad! , And the inhabitants Walgetts, represented by the character of Betty, were a synonym for simple-minded country bumpkins.

Walgett is the center and the administrative seat of the local administrative area in Walgett Shire.
