Wall of Shame

Shame was one of the West Berlin Senate by the end of the 1960s officially used Dysphemismus for the Berlin Wall. It was first used by Willy Brandt.

The term expresses the strong opposition to the border facilities and is thereby contrary to that used in the GDR euphemism " anti-fascist protective wall".

The West Berlin caused by the wall dead ends were often accompanied by the sign " caused by the wall of shame ". Commemorative plaques for the deaths at the Berlin Wall from this period also contained this phrase.

The term " wall of shame " took place in the 1960s, the entrance into the general vocabulary of the population. With the introduction of the policy of detente in the early 1970s, the term largely disappeared from everyday speech and was no longer officially used as a threat to the German -German relations should be prevented by overly harsh language.
