Wallace L. W. Sargent

Wallace Leslie William Sargent (born 15 February 1935 and Elsham, Lincolnshire, † October 29, 2012 ) was an American astronomer British origin.

Sargent studied at Manchester University where he obtained his doctorate in 1959. After living at the California Institute of Technology, the Royal Greenwich Observatory and the University of California, San Diego Sargent in 1966 and 1971 Professor Assistant Professor at the California Institute of Technology. From 1997 to 2000 he headed the Mount Palomar Observatory.

Sargent studied stars and galaxies mainly with methods of spectroscopy. He is known among other things for his investigations of absorption lines in the spectra of quasars, allow conclusions to intergalactic matter and galaxies between Earth and the quasar.

Sargent was married to the astronomer Anneila Sargent.
