Wally Masur

Wallace " Wally " Masur ( born May 13, 1963 in Southampton, Hampshire ) is a former Australian tennis player.

Life

Masur began at the age of eight years with the sport of tennis and was trained as an adolescent at the Australian Institute of Sport. In 1981 he won at the age of 18 years at the side of his compatriot Craig Miller the doubles competition of the junior tournament, the Australian Open. In the same year he won the Australian Junior National Championship, after 1982 he became a professional tennis player. In his career, he won three ATP tournaments in singles and 16 doubles titles. His single title he won in 1983 at the ATP tournament in Hong Kong, in 1986 in Adelaide, and in 1988 in Newport. In doubles, he was victorious at the side of different players. His partners included, among other things, Petr Korda, Pat Cash and Emilio Sánchez. His highest world ranking position he reached in 1993 with number 8 in duplicate and Rank 15 in singles.

His biggest success in Grand Slam tournaments were semi-finals at the Australian Open and the U.S. Open. At the Australian Open in 1987 he defeated, among others, Boris Becker in the second round and eventually defeated Stefan Edberg in three sets. At the U.S. Open in 1993, he won among others against Tomás Carbonell, Patrik Kuhnen and Magnus Larsson before he was Cédric Pioline inferior. In the doubles competition, he was twice in the semifinals at the French Open. In 1998 he was defeated at the side of his compatriot Mark Woodforde against John Fitzgerald and Anders Järryd, 1992, he resigned alongside Mark Kratzmann against the Swiss Jakob Hlasek and Marc Rosset, after they had previously turned off the Australian top duo Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in the second round. In mixed he stood twice in the semifinals of the French Open and once at the Australian Open.

Masur denied 1985-1993 30 single and two double matches for the Australian Davis Cup team, where his record is 17:15. He took part in the Summer Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 in a single for Australia. In 1988 he reached after a victory over Luiz Mattar the second round, where he lost to Carl -Uwe Steeb. In 1992, he failed in the first round to Pete Sampras.
