Walney Island

Walney Iceland Isle of Walney or lies in the Irish Sea west of the Furness Peninsula and is the eighth largest island off the coast of England.

Until 1974, the island and the peninsula were a separate part of the county of Lancashire. The island is now one of Cumbria and is part of the town of Barrow -in- Furness, with which it is connected since 1908 by a bridge.

Walney Iceland is about 17.5 km long and at no point wider than 1.6 km. Its area is 12.99 km ². On Walney approximately 13,000 people live in four places: Biggar, North Scale, Walney North, Vickers Town.

The island was originally used to house workers of Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd; still carries a part of the island the name Vickers Town.

Walney has a golf course, an outdoor children's playground and two animal protection zones. On the entire island there are Sites of Special Scientific Interest. From the zoological importance occurring there are toads (Bufo calamita ) and many bird species.

At the north end of the island is a small airfield, the base of the Lakes Gliding Club.
