Walnut Canyon National Monument

The Walnut Canyon National Monument located about 15 km southeast of Flagstaff (Arizona ) to I-40 at an altitude of 1932 meters ( canyon floor ) to 2039 m ( canyon rim ).

The canyon is home to a unique collection of carved into the hillside cliff dwellings. The construction of cliff dwellings and thus the colonization of the canyon began in the 1100s when the people of the Anasazi was probably forced by changing climatic conditions and a population increase in the southwest to a change in their living and farming habits. Already about 100 years later, they migrated to the southwest which probably led to an assimilation into the Hopi culture.

A 1.4 km loop trail leads about 60 m down into the canyon, passing 25 cliff dwellings.
