Walscheid

Walscheid is a commune with 1623 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Sarrebourg and Canton Sarrebourg.

Geography

Walscheid is located about 11 km southeast of Sarrebourg in the Vosges Mountains at an altitude 294-983 m above sea level; the average height is 400 m. The municipality covers 38.35 km ².

Districts of Walscheid are Eigenthal Sitifort, Saint- Léon ( Leonberg ), AC Bach, Beimbach, Bourg nuns ( nuns castle ) and Rothstein. The municipality is located, except for the west -lying district Eigenthal, just on the German side of the former German - French language border.

History

The town was first mentioned in 880 as Walterescett. The village was German until 1661, then came to France, in 1871 and again in 1919 German French again. In the period from 1940 to 1944 it was under the German administration again and then again the French.

The area belonged to the Counts of Dabo. On the Duerrenberg in today's district of Saint -Léon they built their castle Dürrenstein in which at June 21, 1002 Bruno of Eguisheim, the future Pope Leo IX. was born.
