Walt Barnes

Walter Lee Barnes ( born January 26, 1918 in Parkersburg, West Virginia; † January 6, 1998 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American actor and professional football player. As an actor, he was active mainly in the genres of Western and adventure movie. As a football player he was usually called Walt Barnes. His nickname during his time as an actor were Piggy Barnes and Barney Barnes.

Life and activity

Little is known about the early years of Walter Barnes. 1946/47, he played American football at Louisiana State University, from 1948 to 1951 he was a professional player with the Philadelphia Eagles. Only at the age of almost 40 years, he began his career in 1957 as an actor. By 1959, he starred in several American films and television series with predominantly from the Western genre, including Gunsmoke (1957 /58), Bronco (1958) and Rio Bravo ( 1959).

From 1960 to 1969 he lived and worked mainly in Europe and Barnes was seen mainly in Italian productions. Except in numerous spaghetti westerns he appeared in adventure films, especially pirate movies on. Also in a number of German films he worked with, here are primarily some Karl May movies mentioned: Winnetou Part 1 (1963 ), Frontier Hellcat (1964 ), The Oil Prince (1964 ) and Winnetou and the Half -Breed ( 1966).

In 1969 he returned to the U.S., where he was more active in numerous films, television films and series, including High Chaparral (1970), High Plains Drifter (1973 ), Cahill (1973 ) Pete's Dragon ( 1977) and North and South (1982). Increasingly ill and frail ended Barnes 1989 his career in front of the camera and moved into a retirement home for actors to Woodland Hills (Los Angeles ). In 1991, he spoke a role in the American version of the Japanese animated film Sohryuden. Shortly before his 80th birthday, Walter Barnes died in 1998 of complications from diabetes.

Barnes worked with a total of about 90 film and television productions, of which over 50 were also shown in the German version.

Family

Walter Barnes was temporarily married to the German Britta helix which had some minor appearances in Italian films, including Fellini's Roma ( 1972) by Federico Fellini. Their daughter, civil Daniela Barnes, was known by the stage name Lara Wendel as an actress and fashion model. His son Michael Barnes was seen as a child in supporting roles. In the Italian film bloodlust 1973 Britta Barnes appeared with her two children.
