Walter Aircraft Engines

Walter Engines is a company based in Prague, Czech manufacturer of turbo engines for small aircraft or components for aircraft engines. The company focuses, amongst others since 1975 to over 1500 units built Walter M601 turboprop engine, which was also used for the Let L- 410.

History

The company was founded in 1911 by Josef Walter as a motorcycle manufacturer. From 1913 also cars were initially own models and later Fiat 508 and Fiat 514 made ​​under license. The car production was stopped in 1954.

From the early twenties (1923 ) the company BMW aircraft engines under license, as well as a separate family of air-cooled radial piston engines produced. In the thirties, various Bristol engines such as Jupiter, Mercury and Pegasus were produced in license before its own air-cooled four - and six-cylinder and from 1936 an air-cooled V12 engine (Walter Sagitta ) were prepared.

During the Second World War, Walter Argus engines produced under license from Germany.

The Walter - operation through the war unscathed and was founded in 1946 as Motorlet NE nationalized. He produced approved by the Soviet Union piston engines and launched in 1952 the production of the Walter M05 - jet engine. This was a version of the Soviet Klimov WK -1 engine, based on the Rolls- Royce Nene, which powered the MiG -15 and has been exported to many countries. The company produced during the fifties and sixties a number of other Soviet engines, though the engine piston production closed and was in 1964 transferred to the Czechoslovak aircraft manufacturer Avia.

In 1995, the company as Walter was a.s. privatized and 2005, the Walter machine AS. was from the engine department in July 2006 it was acquired by the Czech investment company FF Invest. In March 2007 it was announced that Walter Engines as would merge with Avias engine department.

In September 2007 it was announced that the business property was purchased (except the service company in Prague ) by the American engine manufacturer GE Aviation.
