Walter de la Mare

Walter John de la Mare ( born April 25, 1873 in Charlton, Kent, † June 22, 1956 in Twickenham, London) was an English poet, writer of short stories, novels and children's books.

Life

De la Mare was born in the county of Kent, the son of a church superintendent. His family is descended from French Huguenots.

His first job at an oil company allowed him enough free time to dedicate himself to writing. He published first under the pseudonym Walter Ramal. Later he worked for eighteen years as an accountant. A government grant of 100 British pounds allowed him to be active as a freelance writer in 1908 and he moved to Buckinghamshire with his family.

His poetry earned him high praise and he was awarded honorary doctorates from the universities of Oxford, London and Bristol. At his residence, the Southend House in Twickenham, where he lived from 1940-1956, a memorial plaque was placed. His grave is located in central London, St Paul's Cathedral.

There is a Walter de la Mare Society, which publishes a magazine since 1998.

Work

De la Mare is famous above all for its imaginative child and nonsense verses. In his narrative works, he represents a romantic, against the domination of the " real " or " visible" -looking view of the world in which time and again that falls beyond the sensual experience of lying in the real world.

He wrote some subtle horror stories that have been published in German translation under the title Out of the depths in 1973 by Island Publishing and later by Suhrkamp Verlag in paperback.
