Walter Friedensburg

Karl Walter Friedenburg ( born March 6, 1855 in Hamburg, † February 19, 1938 in Wernigerode ) was a German archivist and historian.

Life

Walter peace castle was the son of a Hamburg newspaper editor. During his studies in Göttingen in 1874 he became a member of the Black Castle covenant connection fraternity Germania. After studying history at the University of Göttingen and Breslau Friedenburg 1880 received a job as a laborer at the State Archives Archive Magdeburg. Previously, he had 1877 Dr. phil. doctorate. In 1882 he was appointed assistant to the archive. Since 1878 he worked as a lecturer in Marburg and later in Göttingen. 1889 Walter Friedenburg associate professor at the University of Halle.

From 1892 to 1901 he headed the Prussian Historical Institute in Rome and in 1901 Director and Chairman of the State Archives Stettin. Here he was appointed to the Privy Council on Archives. In this role, he moved in 1913 to the State Archives Magdeburg, whose leadership he held until his retirement in 1923. In Wernigerode in the Harz he spent in his purchased Villa Roonstraße 15 years of his life.

Since 1913 Walter Friedenburg was a member of the Historical Commission for the Province of Saxony and Anhalt, of which he took in 1922 and 1923.
