Walter Heller

Walter Wolfgang Heller ( born August 27, 1915 in Buffalo, New York, † June 15, 1987 in Silverdale, Washington) was an American economist who was both Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and President of the American Economic Association.

Life

After schooling Heller, son studied German immigrant, first at Oberlin College and received there in 1935 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A subsequent post-graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin -Madison, he joined in 1938 with a Master of Arts ( MA) and acquired there beyond 1941 a Philosophiae Doctor ( Ph.D.).

He then stayed first at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, where he took over until 1942 a professorship in economics and was a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and the Phi Beta Kappa academic community. After he worked 1942-1946 as financial economists at the Treasury, he became in 1946 Professor of Economics at the University of Minnesota and taught there until 1967. Moreover, he was 1947-1948 tax policy adviser to the U.S. Military Government for Germany ( Office of the U.S. Military Government for Germany ).

He was also the 1961-1964 Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, and thus one of the closest advisor to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson on economic policy issues. In this capacity, his photo appeared on June 8, 1962 under the heading "White House adviser Walter Heller " on the cover of Time magazine. Later, he was from 1965 to 1969 and member of the committee for internal monetary arrangements of the Treasury.

Last time was Heller, who also worked for the Ford Foundation, 1971-1974 President of the National Bureau of Economic Research ( NBER ), and in 1974 president of the American Economic Association ( AEA).
