Walter J. Cummings, Jr.

Walter Joseph Cummings, Jr. ( born September 29, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois, † April 24, 1999 ) was an American lawyer, judge and United States Solicitor General.

Biography

The son of a banker, studied after visiting the St. Albans School in Washington DC and the Chicago Latin School, first at Yale University and graduated in 1937 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA ) from. A subsequent post-graduate studies in law at the Law School of Harvard University, he finished 1940 with a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ). This was followed by 1940 admitted to the bar in the state of Illinois.

Immediately thereafter, he joined the Ministry of Justice of the United States, where he was initially an employee in the office of the Solicitor General and then 1944-1946 Special Assistant to the Attorney General. In 1946 he was a partner of the law firm Sidley & Austin. In December 1952 he was appointed solicitor general by U.S. President Harry S. Truman. However, this office he held just under four months to March 1953. He then returned as a partner in the law firm Sidley back & Austin, where he worked until 1966.

In 1966 he was appointed judge of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, based in Chicago. Last time was Walter Cummings from 1981 until his death in 1999 Chairman (Chief Judge ) of this court.
