Walter J. Mathews

Walter J. Mathews ( born 2 May 1850 in Markesan, Wisconsin, † 1947) was an American architect from Oakland in California. His most famous buildings are the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles and the First Unitarian Church of Oakland.

His father, Julius C. Mathews, was also an architect. The Mathews family moved in 1866 from Wisconsin to California, and Walter got together with his brothers in his father's office, the architects craft. 1886 Walter J. Mathews began in Oakland to work independently. His projects were typical of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was up to at least 1940 in Oakland professionally active.
