Walter Koschatzky

Walter Koschatzky ( born August 17, 1921 in Graz, Styria; † 9 May 2003 in Vienna ) was an Austrian art historian, curator and art historical author.

Training

Walter Koschatzky had to do military service in the Wehrmacht after attending the grammar school federal reformatory Liebenau and from 1936, the military middle school Liebenau 1940-1945.

From 1945 he studied at the Karl- Franzens- University Graz art history, archeology, history and philosophy and received his doctorate in 1952. Had financed with a jazz ensemble and work for the run by the British occupying power station group alpine country and the Styrian Provincial theater his studies.

Private life

Koschatzky since March 23, 1948 was married to Caroline Trude Bauer, who died on 12 July 1994. On 15 July 1996 he married Gabriela Elias. Walter Koschatzky was buried on Hietzing Cemetery in Vienna.

Career

In 1953 he was admitted as an employee of the Office of the Styrian Provincial Government ( State Image, Art topography ), worked from 1955 at the Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz and served there from 1956 to 1961 as director. With acclaimed art exhibitions, art discussions, lecture series on the radio, art walks in Graz, art tours and activities in the public education he made as eloquent art expert on the subject. 1961 hit him Albertina director Otto Benesch ago as his successor.

From 1 January 1962 to 1 October 1986, he was appointed Minister of Education Heinrich Drimmel, ÖVP, director of the collection of the Albertina in Vienna. During his tenure, more than 200 exhibitions took place; Koschatzky was one of the famous curators of Vienna. The list of exhibitions of his Directorate began in 1962 with Gustav Klimt ( to whose 100th birthday). Koschatzky cared more about 100 exhibitions outside the Albertina, mostly abroad. So he set 1972 master drawings at the Albertina in Moscow and Leningrad, 1985 in Washington DC and New York; In 1986 he presented European character art in Beijing. Even after his retirement, he has curated exhibitions and over again. These various television programs came about artists.

He taught 1973-1989 at the Universities of Vienna and Salzburg.

Koschatzky has been very extensively dealt with the problem of the original in the graphic. He has authored numerous art historical works, among others:
