Walter Jerry Payton ( born July 25, 1954 in Columbia, Mississippi; † November 1, 1999 in South Barrington, Illinois) was an US- American football player at the position of the running backs. He played for the Chicago Bears in the National Football League ( NFL).

Payton died at the age of only 45 years from severe liver disease. He is considered one of the best football players of all time. Due to his consistency and his many records he is one of the best players who have ever played in the NFL.

Career

Sweetness, as Payton was called, had been in 1975 after his college education at Jackson State University in the first round of the NFL Draft at the time selected by the Chicago Bears as a fourth player. Walter Payton played as a running back 13 years in the NFL. In these 13 years, he missed only one game due to injury. He played until his retirement in late 1987 for the Chicago Bears. He was a member of the 1985 Bears, the 1986 Super Bowl XX win.

No running back in NFL history played for him for so long at such a high level as Walter Payton. He ran in his 190 games for Chicago 16,726 yards in 3,838 attempts. He scored 110 running touchdowns and caught 15 pass touchdowns. 1977 and 1985 he was elected MVP and Best Offensive Player of the NFL.
