Walter Salles

Walter Salles ( born April 12, 1956 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is a Brazilian film director, screenwriter and film producer.

Life

Walter Salles is the son of Walter Moreira Salles, a Brazilian banker and ambassador of his country. João Moreira Salles His brother is also of professional film director.

With his debut feature film Foreign Country In 1995 he won eight international awards, including the Brazilian as Best Film of the year.

For his feature film Central Station he received at the Berlinale Golden Bear for Best Film and its leading actress Fernanda Montenegro for Best Actress. Already at the Sundance Film Festival, there had been for the Sundance NHK Cinema 100 Award for best screenplay, in the following year a Golden Globe and two Academy Award nominations.

Behind The Sun from 2001 was very well received by film critics as well as from the audience. The film was nominated in the category Best Foreign Language Film Oscar by the Association of Hollywood foreign press correspondents, the National Board of Review and the BAFTA Awards. He won the Audience Award Leoncino d' Oro at the 58th International Venice Film Festival.

2004 was The Motorcycle Diaries, a story by the diaries of Ernesto Guevara. This film was in Latin America, Europe and the U.S. in a short time a box office hit. At the Hollywood Film Festival in 2004, he won the main prize and was nominated for the European Film Awards and the International Film Festival of Cannes.

In 2008 he was represented with the feature film Linha de Passe in competition at the 61st Cannes Film Festival, where he competed for the second time for the Golden Palm. The production was a collaboration between Salles and Daniela Rocca of his countrymen, with whom he collaborated on several occasions in the past and won the Best Actor Award for Leading Actress Sandra Corveloni.

2012 presented Salles finished the U.S. production On the Road, for Jose Rivera ( The Motorcycle Diaries ) provided the screenplay. In the film adaptation of the novel by Jack Kerouac, a classic of the Beat Generation, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart and Sam Riley took over the lead roles. Salles was hired by Francis Ford Coppola, who has since 1979, the rights to the book, its own film but had not accomplished. For On the Road Salles received in 2012 his third invitation to compete in the International Film Festival of Cannes.

In 2003, Salles was chosen by the renowned British newspaper The Guardian among the 40 best film directors in the world.
