Walter Simon (philanthropist)

Walter Simon ( born April 30, 1857 in Königsberg, † April 1, 1920 ibid ) was a German banker, professor and honorary councilor in Königsberg. He earned a generous patron and founder of charitable foundations in Tübingen and Königsberg.

Life

Walter Simon was the son of the Royal Prussian Secret commerzienrath Moritz Simon and his wife Hedwig Simon, nee Hirschberg. He studied at the University of Tübingen and at the Albertus University of Königsberg law, medicine and philosophy. Dr. Phil. He returned to his studies in his native city of Königsberg, where he worked as a banker and an unpaid councilor for the poor and the national education system. He looked like his father as a benefactor in East Prussia provincial capital. In Königsberg in 1899 he received the title of professor.

Foundations

Walter Simon funded in Tübingen several foundations:

Even more money was Simon in his hometown Königsberg for aid projects of different nature: he financed the first public gymnastics and playground of the city, a children's Soup Kitchen, a public library, a school swimming institution and donated money for the poor and hospitals.   • On the occasion of the centenary of the Prussian municipal constitution he was in 1908 an honorary citizen of Königsberg.
  • The Walter Simon Street in Tübingen is named after him.
  • In Konigsberg, the sports field Walter Simon Place was named after him.
