Walther Kranz

Walther Kranz ( born November 23, 1884 in Georgsmarienhütte near Osnabrück, † September 18, 1960 in Bonn ) was a German philologist and classical historian of philosophy.

Biography

Wreath studied 1903-1907 in Berlin Classical Philology at Ulrich von Wilamowitz- Moellendorff, Hermann Diels and Eduard Norden. He received his doctorate in 1910 at Wilamowitz - Moellendorff. For several years he was a teacher at the Berlin Grunewald experimental school in which a sample of pupils received an almost university education. A reputation for extraordinary Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Göttingen (1917 ) he refused. 1928 to 1933 he headed the prestigious high school Schulpforta. From 1932 he began to work at the University of Halle as Honorary Professor for Didactics of the ancient languages ​​and may thus be considered a first university lecturers in teaching methods. He took over the publication of the " fragments of pre-Socratics " from the 5th edition of these fragments, the first editions of Hermann Diels had been brought out.

After the seizure of power by the National Socialists, he experienced political difficulties. His wife was Jewish. He was therefore added in 1935 to a high school and lost 1937 full teaching license. After he had in 1943 accepted the invitation of the University of Istanbul, took ring the Department of History of Philosophy and Classics at the University until 1950. From 1950 to 1955 he was an honorary professor for " Teaching of ancient languages ​​and continuing influence of Antiquity" at the University of Bonn active. Its effects extended more to the popularization of ancient formation than on subject didactics in the strict sense. He died in 1960 in Bonn.
