Waltraut Cooper

Waltraud Cooper ( born 1937 in Linz) is an Austrian artist.

She studied mathematics and theoretical physics at the University of Vienna and later at the Sorbonne in Paris. After teaching in Linz and at the University of California Cooper began a career as an artist and studied painting and graphic arts in Lisbon and Frankfurt.

The two-time Venice Biennale participant (1986 and 1995) showed works on art and science, at festivals and exhibitions in major museums and galleries in Vienna, Rome, Paris, Montreal, Boston and New York.

Waltraud Cooper is regarded as a pioneer of digital art. Cooper's " sound Mikado ", which she created in 1987 for the Ars Electronica, is considered a classic in the digital arts.

Her artistic work with a focus on media, light and architecture has been honored with numerous awards.

Waltraud Cooper is a member of the Society of Women Artists and Austrian Artists House since 1980. Kuraturiumsmitglied It is the Austrian Society for Cultural Policy.

On 18 May 2010 she was awarded the title of Professor.

She is married to the university mathematics professor James Bell Cooper and has a daughter.

Work

The mid-1970s caused Coopers first room installations. Later, the artist is increasingly replacing of traditional forms of work and puts the light at the center of their interest and creativity. Waltraud Cooper recorded whole building facades with computerized light and sound installations that create an intense connection to the public space. "Hardly an artist has the tension between poetry and computers, between light and color as versatile as they explored ".

In their large-scale project "Rainbow for Europe " (2004) historically important buildings was immersed in colored light as a sign of connection between people, times and places ( Royal Castle in Warsaw, Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Rome's Coliseum in selected European cities, Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, European Parliament, Brussels, Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow).
