Walvis Ridge

The Walvis Ridge is a steep mid-ocean ridge in the South Atlantic with a length of around 3,000 kilometers. The back rises of more than 5,000 m water depth at several points to less than 200 m below the water surface. It lies between the coast of South West Africa ( Walvis Bay, Namibia ) and the volcanic island group of Tristan da Cunha, where it connects to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

The Walvis Ridge separates the Angola Basin from the Cape Basin - both ocean basins that reach depths of over 5,000 meters.

The Walvis Ridge was created after today's presentation either by activities of a transform fault or from magma that was produced by hot spots of the Tristan da Cunha - volcano. In the course of the drifting apart of the plates of this magma migrated with the African plate eastward.
