Wang E

Wáng È (Chinese:王 谔) lived around 1500 and was a Chinese painter of the Ming period.

His landscapes take stylistic reference to the painting of the Song period and are based on the famous painter of the Song Academy Ma Yuan, who was at the time of the Southern Song Dynasty active. Like his role model used Wang E as the ax - cun ( cun " brush stroke " ) technique referred to trace plastic with hard strokes sharp cliffs. The image is 61.8 cm in ink and colors painted on a hanging scroll with the dimensions of 106.7 × on silk and originated in the reign of Hongzhi ( 1487-1505 ). It bears a seal of the artist and two imperial seal. His title is In Search of the plum blossom in the snow and shows a winter alpine landscape with dark sky in which moves on a narrow mountain path a rider with his entourage on an objective in the mist valley below. The narrative title of the image points to the poet Meng Haoran Tang, who allegedly sought in such snowy landscapes, riding on a donkey his poetic inspiration. Though the image designate no explicit poem, the mention of the " Plum Blossom " in the title illustrates the poetic terms, the producing the image with a prominent motif of Chinese literature. In poetry and narrative, the plum blossoms delight as the first flower of the year and a harbinger of spring in Asia particularly popular.

Technically and picturesque particularly appealing to the painter are the shades of gray of Tuschelavierungen succeeded, contrasting with the prominent drawing of jagged, dark cliffs and treetops.

Wang E succeeds in this and similar images to combine the monumentality of the landscape painting of the Song Academy with a popular and poetic visual language of his time, which explains his former extraordinary popularity at the imperial court.
