Wanica District

Wanica is a district in the northeast of Suriname. It is located southwest of Paramaribo, borders west to the district Saramacca south to the district Para and east to the district Commewijne. In the north it is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean a few kilometers.

Wanica is next to the Paramaribo District of the smallest and most densely populated district of Suriname. Its capital, Marienburg, was originally called Kofidjompo, but was renamed in 1905 after the Dutch engineer and governor of the colony Cornelis Lely in Marienburg.

In parliament ( Assemblée Nationale De ) is represented by seven members of the District of Wanica.

While the population of the neighboring capital Paramaribo District declined slightly in 2012, according to the results of the population and housing census, the district had Wanica over the previous census in 2004, with around 32,200 people the largest increase of all districts.
