Waplewo, Olsztyn County

Waplewo [ vaplɛvɔ ] ( German: Waplitz ) is a village in the municipality of Olsztynek, Olsztyński powiat in Poland. It is located near the cities Olsztynek ( Hohenstein ) and Nidzica ( Neidenburg ) in the Warmia - Mazury.

History

The first written mention of the town was 1384. Waplitz was the center of a church play and belonged to the district of Osterode in East Prussia.

During the Battle of Grunwald took place on August 28, 1914 to the battle of Waplitz. The fallen soldiers of both armies was buried in the cemetery of honor Waplitz.

In January 1945 it was conquered by the Soviet Army and later in Polish. 1975 to 1998 the town was part of the Province of Olsztyn.
