Ward Kimball

Ward Walrath Kimball ( March 4, 1914 in Minneapolis, † July 8, 2002 in Los Angeles ) was an American film director and cartoon animator and jazz trombonist and bandleader. He was one of Disney 's Nine Old Men

Life and work

Kimball was after high school magazine illustrator and studied in California at Santa Barbara School of Art From 1934 he worked at the Walt Disney Studios and worked on the character animation known Disney characters like Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio with (1940 ), Tweedledee and Tweedledum in Alice in Wonderland (1949) and Lucifer the Cat in Cinderella (1950). In addition, Ward acted for Disney as a director of short films Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom (1953 ) which was the first CinemaScope cartoon, and It's Tough to Be a Bird ( 1969), the company's Oscar ( Best Animated Short Film) Award. In 1954, he appeared in an episode of the television series You Bet Your Life Groucho Marx. During the 1950s he produced films for the Disneyland television show Man in Space ( Wernher von Braun ); in the 1960s he worked on the script of the fantasy film musicals Babes in Toyland with and was engaged in the design of theme parks such as World of Motion, 1972 he sat down to rest. In 1989 he was awarded the Disney Legends in the category Animation & Imagineering.

While at Disney, he led with fellow Disney employees like Frank Thomas, the Dixieland jazz band Firehouse Five Plus Two. With the band, he presented some singles ( Goes to Sea ) and LPs and appeared in the 1940s in clubs, colleges and at jazz festivals. In the cast of Kimball, Johnny Lucas ( trumpet), Clarke Mallery (clarinet ), Frank Thomas ( piano ), Harper Goff ( piano ), Ed Penner ( bass), Jim McDonald ( drums) formed in Hollywood in 1949 first recordings for the label Good Time Jazz ( Firehouse Stomp ).
