Ward Plummer

Ward E. Plummer ( born October 20, 1940 in Astoria ( Oregon)) is an American physicist who does research in the field of surface chemistry.

Plummer was awarded the 1962 BA in physics and mathematics at Lewis and Clark College, and in 1968 a PhD in Physics from Cornell University. At the National Bureau of Standards, he was from 1967 to 1968, first NRC Fellow, Staff Scientist and then to 1970 to 1973 Assistant Section Chief. He moved to the University of Pennsylvania where Plummer to 1977 as an Associate Professor of Physics and until 1988 served as Professor of Physics. Until 1992 he held the position of William Smith Professor of Physics. Since 1993 he has been at the University of Tennessee as a Distinguished Professor of Physics and additionally since 2009 as a Professor of Physics at Louisiana State University.

Plummer research on phenomena that arise in the context of unique environments on surfaces by broken symmetries or reduced dimensionality, especially when combined electronic, magnetic and structural properties.
