Warren County (North Carolina)

Warren County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Warrenton.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern North Carolina, bounded on the north Virginia and has an area of 1149 square kilometers, of which 39 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Northampton County, Halifax County, Franklin County and Vance County, North Carolina and Mecklenburg County and Brunswick County, Virginia.

In the north, the County share of two large reservoirs. While ranging from the John H. Kerr Reservoir just a few bays to the north-western corner of Warren County is a large part of Lake Gaston on County area.

Warren County is divided into 12 townships: Fishing Creek, Fork, Hawtree, Judkins, Nutbush, River, Roanoke, Sandy Creek, Shocco, Sixpound, Smith Creek and Warrenton.

History

Warren County was formed in 1779 from the defunct Bute County. It was named, as is the district capital of Warrenton, according to Joseph Warren of Massachusetts, an officer who was killed at the battle of Bunker Hill.
